about

My debut solo album was recorded between the years 2009-2018. I consciously decided to write and record each song in the same way.
Each song was built off of a kernel, a small musical idea, usually recorded on guitar and between 5-60 seconds long. Up until now, I have recorded all initial ideas onto tape. For this album, I went to the very first tape I filled up, which I believe was filled up between the years 2009-2011, and starting in 2016, I wrote a song based around the first 10 kernels I felt I could use. My goal was to stick to the heart and the part that grabbed me of the little bit I recorded and try to make the whole rest of the song relate to that part as clearly as I could. The original tape recording of each kernel was kept in the final recording of each song.

Each song was written through the process of recording it and each was written consecutively, only moving on to the next song once the old one was completely finished. In the past, songs I wrote have tried to directly pay homage to a song or riff by another artist that really grabbed me. In my opinion, this is the first music I've written that feels completely my own, and I owe it to the strict blueprint I gave myself for writing it: attempting to only pull parts from the original kernel.

Every instrument and piece of equipment I own is on the album. Even a what turned out to be broken synth I inherited, which only emitted broken up distorted noise, found its place on the album, as did childhood recorders, train whistles and a cello with a sorry bow. I self-recorded the album in my basement in Brooklyn, NY.
